School News and Events for September 2016
Chorus Starts Thursday, September 8th
We're excited to announce that Pacific Elementary School's Chorus is getting started again. Chorus will again be on Thursdays.
On September 8 and 15, Stephanie Raugust will be helping students to prepare for the memorial celebration for Gwendolyn Boger, scheduled for Saturday, September 17 (see letter below from Stephanie for more details). These two days of Chorus are open to anyone, new or returning, for free, regardless of whether they intend to continue Chorus for the rest of the semester.
Our new music teacher, Kristin Allen-Farmer, will be taking over Chorus beginning September 22. Kindergarten through third grade will meet from 2:40 to 3:40. Upper IS and 5-day fourth through sixth grade will meet from 3:05 to 4:05. For both groups, snacks will be served at the beginning, followed by instruction. Tuition for the semester (September through December) will be $100, payable to Pacific School. Financial aid is available; all interested students are welcome to participate regardless of ability to pay. To inquire about financial aid, contact Molly Tierney in the office (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Important Note: If you require child care between 12:30 and the start of chorus for your kindergartener or IS first grader, you must be signed up for After Care. Spaces in the After Care program are limited, so be sure to check in advance and make alternate arrangements if the program is full.
Special Chorus Celebration
From Stephanie Raugust:
Dear Pacific School Chorus,
We have been requested to sing at a celebration for Gwendolyn our past chorus director. I am hoping we can get as many young singers there as possible. The time and place is below for your calendars.

As we begin a new school year and also remember our past school year, I am hoping for this to be a simple gathering, a simple expressions of some songs that work well for us in this evening Celebrating Gwendolyn’s Life. The song list is short, all songs that Gwendolyn directed with you. There may be others you may wish to sing too?
We will have two rehearsals of these songs on:

If planning a snack for a classroom, use this helpful competitive food standards calculator. These are the nutritional requirements we use for our snack baskets and a great educational resource for kids! In 2006, schools across the country were required to develop Local School Wellness Policies (LSWP) that set standards for nutrition education, physical activity, foods served and sold, and other activities that support student wellness.
Bouquets from the School Garden
Look for Life Lab Flower Bouquet sales in the front of school on Mondays and Thursdays. Pick a pretty one and pay in the office. Thanks to Brooke, Reese, and Vanni for creating our first garden cart harvest! Funds collected from our first weeks of sales will go to the Ms. Morrison health care fund. I.S. kids will also be helping with bouquets on some STEAM Anandi's Thursday's so look for some fresh stems then too!
Free Cars and More...
Drive for Schools is on! Tickets will be available by the end of this week and 100% of proceeds go directly to the school. This is an amazing opportunity to both have a chance at getting a new car or some cash AND help gain financial support for Pacific School. Classrooms will have tickets available by the end of the week so get ready to buy AND sell tickets for this amazing fundraiser. Good luck!

Bring wheelbarrows, shovels, garden tools, curiosity, expertise, and an appetite for pizza. Stay as long as you'd like; kids are welcome. We’ve gotten a lot of work done this summer but still have more to do. Our main to-do list:
News from the Board
At the board meeting on September 15, 2016, the remaining Trustees Gwyan Rhabyt and Don Croll, appointed a provisional trustee to complete the term of Trustee Roger Knapp, who became ineligible to continue to serve when he moved to Santa Cruz this summer. Provisional Trustee Leanne Salandro will serve out the remainder of the term until 2018, at which time an election will be held. Leanne is the mother of Enzo (in IS 1st) and Matteo (PK) and lives in New Town. She has been active in supporting the school in many ways, especially in regards to landscaping, the website, and the Green Memo.

Family Handbook: School Vision and Goals: "Pacific School strives to give each child a lifelong appreciation of learning. Our rich educational environment provides every student with a broad foundation of knowledge and practical experience. The curriculum integrates with California State Standards and is delivered through multi-graded classroom programs. Well-rounded instruction is complemented by a variety of programs, including music, Life Lab, and physical education, as well as visual, performing, and culinary arts. Students develop a sense of community while maintaining individuality and creative self-expression. Our diverse community fosters cooperative skills, mutual respect, and pride in academic progress."
Family Handbook: Late Arrival: "Please ensure your student arrives on time to school every day. Attendance is taken on the blacktop at 8:45 a.m. sharp. All students who arrive late to school (i.e. after 8:45 a.m.) must check in at the school’s office to receive a tardy slip before going to class. If your student will be arriving after 9:00 a.m., please call the office with the information described above for absences. Late-arriving students are one of the biggest disruptions we experience in our classrooms and in the school office. Signing in tardy students hinders the ability of the office staff to deal effectively with emergencies and other situations that come up each morning. The morning is also disrupted for their classmates, and classroom teachers are forced to repeat directions. The late student may feel embarrassed and miss crucial instruction. Thank you for helping your student arrive on time every day. Together we can make a difference!"
Family Handbook, Snacks and School Lunches: "Snacks and the Wellness Policy: The Pacific School District Governing Board has adopted a Wellness Policy that addresses nutrition education, physical activity, environmental education, and student wellness. It establishes nutritional guidelines for the food served at school, including snacks and birthday treats. Food and beverages donated to school parties and school events shall be subjec t to the same nutritional guidelines as sold foods. Parents and staff are encouraged to provide snacks that are consistent with the goals of the policy. Each class will send home a list of appropriate snack foods, and parents will receive wellness information on a regular basis through the school memo. The full Wellness Policy can be found on the school website under Governance; Plans & LCAP."
Early Dismissal/Appointments: "Please schedule appointments for the end of the school day if at all possible in order to decrease classroom disruptions and avoid unnecessary absences. Send a note with your child if he/she needs to leave early. He/she must be signed out by a parent/guardian using the early sign-out clipboard in the office. Children must be picked up from the office. Please do not go to the classroom to pick up your child unless otherwise directed by the office staff. Please sign your child back in through the office if returning him/her to school." Questions? Be sure to consult the updated Family Handbook.
