School Library and Reading Buddies
School Library
The Pacific School Library is located in the heart of the school where people pass through and is very easy for most classrooms to access. Thanks to the previous support of the Davenport Cement Plant and the ongoing support of Pacific School's Parents' Club, the library has an extensive and updated collection. Parents' Club also supports our librarian, Kim Sakellis ("Kim"), who works with our volunteer librarian, Noel Bock ("Ms. Bock"). The library promotes the Birthday Book program, where children can donate a copy of a favorite book on their birthday. A special plate is put in the front of the book commemorating the birthday and naming the donor. To contribute a birthday book or volunteer in the library, please contact your classroom teacher or School Librarian Kim Sakellis: ksakellis @ pacificesd.org. |
Reading Buddies
The library works hand in hand with the Reading Buddy program, where higher grades visit lower grades every week so that each student can read with his or her buddy. We pair classes so that students progressing through the school can get to know their younger/older fellow students over four years:
Bookmobile Schedule The Santa Cruz Public Libraries Bookmobile provides library services to persons who are not served or who are underserved by traditional branches due to physical economic, social, geographic or other barriers. The Bookmobile parks at Ocean Street & Marine View Avenue, Davenport, CA (in front of the school) every other Monday between 2-4. When Monday is a holiday, the Bookmobile visits on an alternate day. Check the current schedule here. You can reserve books on the Santa Cruz County Library website and have them sent to the Bookmobile to be picked up, or browse their small but excellent collection when they are here. Support the School Library! Bookshop Santa Cruz is offering a new program that can help keep your school library updated with new books when your students return to school, which also helps support our local book store. You can purchase gift cards for the school library through Bookshop Santa Cruz now. Bookshop will keep track of how much money per school has been donated then present your library with a gift card for that amount. Use the following website and select Pacific Elementary when you purchase your gift card: https://www.bookshopsantacruz.com/booksforschools |
